The Handmaid's Tale
The Handmaid’s Tale tells the story of Offred, a woman forced to live as a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian society that has replaced the United States after environmental disasters and declining birth rates. Women are stripped of their rights and assigned rigid social roles, while fertile women are compelled to bear children for elite families. Through Offred’s memories and experiences, Margaret Atwood explores themes of oppression, gender inequality, political control, and resistance in a dystopian future that serves as a warning about the dangers of authoritarianism and the loss of individual freedom.
